The Defense Position (At the Back)
Think of you and your partner as being connected by a 10-foot string. When one moves left, the other moves left. When one moves forward, the other moves forward.
When you are at the net, you should be about 2-3 meters away from the mesh. This gives you enough room to react to volleys while still being close enough to put the ball away.
- The Center Gap: Always cover the middle. Most winning shots in padel go right down the center.
When defending, stand behind the white line and slightly towards the side glass. This allows you to use the walls effectively and gives you time to read the opponent's smash.
The most dangerous place to be is 'No Man's Land' (the middle of the court). Either be fully at the net or fully at the back. Don't get caught in between!
Call for the ball! 'Mine', 'Yours', or 'Switch' are the three most important words you'll use on the court.

Q: Who should take the balls in the middle?
A: Usually, the player on the left (if right-handed) takes the middle balls because they can use their forehand.
Q: Should we always stay side-by-side?
A: Generally, yes. Moving as a unit prevents easy passing shots.
Next time you play, focus on your movement relative to your partner. You'll find yourself winning more points simply by being in the right place at the right time!
